As early as age 10, Dr. James Benner would accompany his mom to her work at a laboratory in a large hospital, where he was captivated to look at blood smears under the microscope. Meanwhile, his grandfather, a respected watch repairman, shared the secrets of his trade as well, which is perhaps even more poetic considering Dr. Benner's life work as a surgeon specializing in cardiac (heart), thoracic (lung) and vascular (blood vessel) repair work. "I love to operate. The precision and the attention to detail are what attract me and keep me going, as well as seeing the patients do so well. It's very rewarding," says Dr. Benner, chief of cardiac surgery for Trident Health. Dr. Benner also enjoys sharing his work with his six children, ages 7 to 23. They have grown up visiting his practice, Palmetto Cardiovascular and Thoracic Associates, where his wife also served as office manager for many years. Their oldest is in her second year of medical school.
